After weeks of not hearing a response about his concerto, he becomes worried and returns to the publisher, Maurice Pleyel, to ask about it. In a desperate attempt to earn money, Claudin submits a piano concerto he has written for publication. Christine considers them both good friends but doesn't openly express if she loves them. But famed opera baritone Anatole Garron hopes to win Christine's heart. Meanwhile, Christine is pressured by Inspector Raoul Dubert to quit the Opera and marry him. Unbeknownst to the conductor, who assumes Claudin can support himself, the musician has used all his money to help anonymously fund voice lessons for Christine Dubois, a young soprano to whom he is devoted. Still, the idea that Quasimodo’s affliction makes him monstrous will almost surely garner criticism, depending on how the material is handled. Universal will likely inject some supernatural elements into their stories so they make sense in a world filled with vampires and invisible men. However, it’s worth noting that neither the Phantom nor the Hunchback are monsters in any traditional sense, just disfigured men. Pulling the two characters into the Dark Universe shows that it’s going back to its horror roots, even though modern audiences are more likely familiar with the two characters from theatrical musicals or Disney films. The Phantom and the Hunchback aren’t even really monstersġ923’s The Phantom of the Opera and 1925’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame were two of Universal’s first monster movies, and they laid the groundwork for the studio’s later films. ![]()
